Socks for EU 52, 53, 54. They barely exist. Yet.
From EU 52 (US 17) regular retail stops. There are a few sports and work socks, the odd "51-54" label, and almost never a sock that goes with suit trousers. Here is what your foot needs, how to spot a usable sock and how we knit the 52-53 bracket.
How long is a foot in EU 52, 53 or 54?
EU shoe sizes count in Paris points: one size is two thirds of a centimetre of last length, and the foot is about one and a half centimetres shorter than the last. That gives these guide values. Measure anyway, shoe brands often deviate by half a size.
| Shoe size | Foot length approx. | US men | UK | OFFSCALE bracket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EU 51 | 33 cm | US 16 | UK 15.5 | 50–51 |
| EU 52 | 33.5–34 cm | US 17 | UK 16 | 52–53* |
| EU 53 | 34.5 cm | US 17.5 | UK 17 | 52–53* |
| EU 54 | 35 cm | US 18 | UK 17.5 | 54+* |
| EU 55 | 35.5–36 cm | US 19 | UK 18 | 54+* |

Why socks above EU 52 barely exist
Every sock size is its own machine programme, its own stock position and its own minimum quantity. From 46 the volumes get small for large manufacturers, and from 52 they are uninteresting for most. So the scale ends at "47-50", and anyone bigger is expected to stretch into that sock.
At EU 52 a "47-50" is about three centimetres short. The heel slides under the arch, heel and toe go thin, the cuff strangles the calf. That is not just comfort, it is material fatigue by design: the places that take the most load get the least yarn. Why 47-50 never fits, in detail.
What to look for in socks for EU 52 and up
- A size range that suits you. A label that ends at your size means stretched at the top end. Better a range where you sit at the bottom or middle, or a sole length stated in centimetres.
- Sole length, not stretch promises. For a 34 cm foot the sock should have roughly a 34 cm sole, relaxed. A sock is knitted slightly shorter than the foot, but not three centimetres.
- A wider cuff and leg. Big feet rarely come on thin calves. A cuff made for a size 42 leaves a ring by the evening.
- Cotton with some polyamide. Cotton for feel, polyamide for durability at heel and toe, a few percent elastane for hold. A high elastane share does not replace missing length.
- A flat toe seam. Long feet and long days in shoes make every thick seam count.
How OFFSCALE knits the 52-53 bracket
We knit in brackets of two shoe sizes, each with its own sole and leg length. The first run covers 46 to 51. The 52-53 bracket is fully developed and ready at our mill: 34 cm sole, 32 cm leg, wider cuff, the same material as the other brackets (82% combed cotton, 15% polyamide, 3% elastane) and the same six designs.
| Bracket | Sole, relaxed | Leg | Cuff |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU 46–47 | 28 cm | 26 cm | standard |
| EU 48–49 | 30 cm | 28 cm | wider |
| EU 50–51 | 32 cm | 30 cm | wider |
| EU 52–53* | 34 cm | 32 cm | wider |
What is missing is volume. A size is worth knitting when enough people want to wear it. So we count every reservation for EU 52 or larger individually. The same goes for 54 and 55: we collect, and when there are enough, we develop the next bracket.

Frequently asked questions about socks for EU 52 and up
Are there socks for shoe size EU 52 (US 17)?
Hardly any in regular retail, and mostly sports or work socks. OFFSCALE has developed a 52-53 bracket with a 34 cm sole and 32 cm leg and knits it as soon as enough people have reserved it.
What sock size do I need for EU 53?
Your foot is about 34.5 cm long. A sock for you should have a sole of around 34 cm, relaxed. At OFFSCALE that is the 52-53 bracket.
Does a 47-50 sock fit EU 52?
You can put it on, but it does not fit. About three centimetres of length are missing and have to come from stretch. The heel ends up under the arch, and heel and toe thin out and wear quickly.
Are there dress socks for US size 18 or 19?
Ready to buy, almost none. OFFSCALE collects reservations from EU 54 (about US 18) and develops the next bracket once enough come together. Register your size.
What is EU 52 in US sizes?
Roughly US men's 17, UK 16. Because the systems do not map cleanly, foot length in centimetres is the more reliable value.
