Dress socks for big feet. How to tell good ones.
If you wear EU 46 (US 12) or above, you know the choice: black, navy, tennis sock. And even the black one usually fits badly. A good dress sock is no secret science, though. Five things decide, and you can check all of them when you buy.
1. The length has to be knitted, not stretched
A dress sock is thinner than a sports sock, so it forgives missing length even less: pulled over the foot, the fine knit goes see-through at heel and toe. Look for a size range of at most two shoe sizes, or a sole length in centimetres. A "47-50" is too short for an EU 50 foot, here is why. Find your length in the sock size table for EU 46 to 55.
2. Crew or over-the-calf?
Classic tailors swear by over-the-calf socks, because no leg ever shows when you sit. For big men with strong calves they are often torture. A crew sock ends below the calf, mid-shin. A properly long crew sock with enough leg keeps your shin covered when seated without strangling anything. OFFSCALE knits crew socks with a 26 to 30 cm leg depending on size.
3. Material: cotton with reinforcement
Combed cotton is smooth, breathes and feels good. On its own it does not last, so polyamide belongs in it, above all at heel and toe. A few percent elastane keeps the sock in shape. Ours: 82% combed cotton, 15% polyamide, 3% elastane. More elastane sounds like comfort, but in large sizes it is often a sign that length is being replaced with stretch.
4. Cuff and leg: wider from EU 48
A cuff that leaves a ring after a day is too tight. In large sizes that happens constantly, because many manufacturers knit the same leg for all sizes. Big feet almost always come with strong calves. So we knit leg and cuff wider from the 48-49 bracket upward, with a softer yarn in the cuff.
5. Colour with a suit
The old rule: match the sock to the trousers, not the shoes. With dark trousers, midnight navy, charcoal or near-black are never wrong. The other school: deliberate contrast that shows you thought about it. Both work, as long as the sock fits. A loud sock that wrinkles looks accidental. One that sits smooth looks intentional.
Our six designs follow that idea: three for the office (The Boardroom, The Tuxedo, The Diplomat), three with a point of view (Shades of Blue, The Cocktail Hour, Disco Floor). On the two-tone models the colour changes at the middle of the foot, where nobody sees it in the shoe and everybody sees it when the shoes come off.
Care, so they last
- Wash inside out at 40 °C with similar colours.
- Tumble dry low only, or dry flat. Heat is elastane's biggest enemy.
- No fabric softener: it makes cotton soft but less absorbent.
- Wash and wear pairs together so they age the same.

Frequently asked questions about dress socks for big feet
Where can I get dress socks for US size 14, 15 or 16?
In regular stores mostly as a "47-50" (roughly US 13 to 16), one knitted size for four shoe sizes. OFFSCALE knits dress socks in EU 46-47, 48-49 and 50-51 (roughly US 12 to 16), each with its own sole length (28, 30 and 32 cm). First run winter 2026.
What colour socks go with a navy suit?
Classically a sock in the tone of the trousers or slightly darker: midnight navy or charcoal. If you like contrast, pick up a colour from the tie or pocket square.
Are over-the-calf socks better than crew socks with a suit?
They reliably stop any leg from showing when you sit. For big men with strong calves they are often uncomfortable. A crew sock knitted long enough, with a wider cuff, is the more comfortable answer.
Why do my dress socks wear through at the heel so fast?
Usually because they are too short. A short sock gets stretched over the foot, which leaves the least yarn at heel and toe, exactly where the friction is.
Do big and tall stores sell dress socks in my size?
Some do, but often still as a single "one size fits big" sock. Check the stated sole length or size range: two shoe sizes per sock is what fits cleanly.
